The demo database
This chapter explains some functions using the demo database
The database screen: When you have opened the demo database you will see the following screen:
The screen is divided in 6 different sections. The sections in the top part of the screen display info on the items (i.e.files) in the database, while the sections in the bottom part of the screen display info related to the keywords. You can resize the sections using the splitters between the sections.
In the left top section you see a view of all items in the database. The list is sorted by filename, but you can change the sort order with the combobox provided. You can find an item by typing the first letters of the filename in the search field. You can switch between details view and thumbnail view using the popupmenu. If you scroll the items list to the right you see that various properties of the items are saved in the database, not only regular properties like filesize and date, but also 'description' and 'recording time'.
'Description' is taken from the first line in the remarks field, and 'recording time' is a field that is extracted from certain file types (digital camera jpeg files, MsWord documents, mp3 music files).
You can alter the order of the columns in the table by dragging the column title to a different position. The number in the first column indicates the number of keywords that are linked to the item. This number is striked through if the file is 'not online' (when the disk volume that the file is on is not found in the computer).
For each item in the database a 'thumbnail' (a minituarized image) can be stored (most useful for image files obviously). We have supplied some of the actual image files in this demo, look for a file called 'tulip1.jpg'. If you select this item and then double-click on the thumbnail, the image will be shown in the image viewer.
In the left-bottom section you maintain the list of keywords in the database. Keywords can be linked to items in the database. Therefore, each keyword defines a group or list of items, displayed in the bottom-right section. Press the 'Show' button if the list is not visible.
For each keyword you may enter text that can be searched (Remarks)
Keywords are organized in keyword groups. To show keywords from only one group, uncheck the check mark at the bottom.
A keyword may represent various things, for instance:
- a playlist, if the items linked to this keyword are music files (see keyword "Demo (playlist)")
- a slide show, if the items linked to this keyword are image files (see keyword "Demo (slideshow)"). You can even run a slideshow with images located on the internet.
- a web page: see keyword "Page0" (explained in separate chapter)
- just a note: see keyword "Notes"
Searching: You can search the database for items or keywords in a variety of ways. Read more about how to search here.
Drag & Drop: You can drag items from the database to a folder to copy them. If you drag from the bottom-right list you may also use the Shift and the Alt key while dragging. Using the Shift key indicates that you wish to drag all items in the list, and using the Alt key while dragging you can change the order of the list (useful for slideshow/playlist).
You can drop files, texts and URL's on the text controls.
